  • 1.  Earning Your CPE Credits

    Posted May 12, 2020 06:12:00 PM
    Hi Everyone,

I've been asked a number of times recently about CPE credits and thought I'd bring the discussion here. What is your favorite way to earn your credits each year and ultimately, where do you end up getting them? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

ProTip: You can earn up to 12 CPE credits when you attend our CloudBytes Connect virtual event at the end of May!

I've found a balance of giving and receiving are very helpful. This typically means attending a training session to learn, and presenting or authoring to educate others (based on your own experiences or research).  The learning and teaching aren't usually on the same specific topic, but both are in a related domain.

Expand your capacity with new knowledge, then crystallize what you've learned by sharing.

I love this! I think it's a great way to solidify community as well and have a reciprocal relationship with education.

CSA generally offers documentation for attending trainings, events, webinars and working groups. These can then be submitted to the body that requires the individual to acquire CPE credits. It is of course up to that body to decide if those submissions are acceptable. Since I have been with CSA I have never heard of anyone's CPE submission of documented activity with CSA being rejected. Has anyone else?

I really like all of the following
    1) Security Conferences (Sadly DefCon is canceled)
    2) Security Podcasts:  Security Now (Steve Gibson), Internet Storm Center (Johannes Ullrich), Darknet Diaries (I like the old ones better), Privacy Security & OSINT (used to be called Complete Privacy & Security Pocast, Brakeing Down Security with Bryan Brake)
    3) Other excellent podcasts:  The Cloud Cast, Cyber (Motherboard)
    4) Speaking, Teaching, Tutoring (I teach CISSP, CISSP-AP, CISSP-MP, CCSP etc...)  Although what you do for your regular job does not count for CPEs generally so only the volunteer work and new content count.
    5) Reading Books suggestions include (Bullet Proof TLS, The Code Book by Simon Singh, Bruce Schneier Applied Crypto, Cuckkoo's Egg, Mark Russinovich Books (Zero Day, Rogue Code, Trojan Horse, WinInternals etc...),
    6) Lastly some webinars, but half of them are vendor pitches so buyer beware.
If you have other security podcasts suggestions please reply (I am full up on a book reading list)

You can also access the CSA Security Update Podcast website for some interesting topics and recordings that will support CPE rules for most certifications.https://csa303731.buzzsprout.com/
