This week I will be attending SECtember, CSA's flagship event for the cloud and cybersecurity communities. With speakers ranging from Jen Easterly (Director of CISA), Mark Russinovich (Azure CTO), and Christopher Krebs (Former Director of CISA), I am most looking forward to hearing from Andy Kirkland (Global CISO & VP for Starbucks). Starbucks is much more than a coffee company; it's also secretly a bank. With the functionality of the Starbucks app to add cash to an account to redeem at any Starbucks store, the total balance on Starbucks cards is over $1.6 billion, meaning customers are lending Starbucks $1.6 billion in cash. 85% of the US banks have less than $1billion in total assets. When it comes to banking, more sophisticated protection and attack detection mechanisms are required in terms of their cybersecurity. I can't wait to hear from Andy and learn how Starbucks protects these digital assets and what the future has in store for them.
