While allowing users to pay $8 a month to become verified on
Twitter
was a good idea at the time to bring in revenue, it opened up a surge of
#fake
accounts posing as reputable people or businesses becoming verified.
#Impersonators
include a fake Lebron James and a fake Nintendo, verified with blue checkmarks. In a society where we are subconsciously trained to trust that blue check mark, we now need to look beyond the check mark and take a few more precautionary steps to verify if the account is whom they say they are.
#Cybersecurity
experts urge Twitter users to look at the following information:
- When was the account made?
- What were some of the recent tweets sent?
- How many followers does the account have?
