When Health Information Technology systems seamlessly exchange data with each other, it is referred to as interoperability. Interoperability occurs when information is transferred using a standardized format. The goal is for the receiving provider to find the data readable, acceptable, and accurate.
This is crucial for correct patient care, but also for patient safety.
