I suppose the true concerns here are the ramifications of such an event too. Hackers or foreign enemies want to take down the grid and pull some mass attack like another 911. That's a bit more serious than someone hacking a few thousand from a bank or whatever. A girlfriend was concerned about the smart meters, maybe that's why? From a mathematical stand point it's an expected gain function. Like poker players with "pot odds"?

Generally, their smart meter has the GSM or LTE dialer means a kind of SIM card inside the meter. So it will have reduced attack surface . I tested their meter during a cybersecurity assessment
But it does not mean that virus can not be uploaded but a higher chance is for the Platform rather than the instrument itself.
