This week’s Word of the Week is: vulnerability. A vulnerability is an occurrence of a weakness within a product or service that can be used by a party to cause the product or service to modify or access unintended data, interrupt proper execution, or perform incorrect actions that were not specifically granted to the party who uses the weakness.
Vulnerabilities are different when compared to other software bugs for one simple reason: they don’t expose themselves and change the state of the system until someone triggers them intentionally. Even when the system state changes to a less secure state, the attacker still needs to take advantage of it.
