's "The Convergence of IT and Operational Technology" report, 75% of the devices that keep facilities like electricity and water treatment plants safe and operational have severe, unpatched
#cybersecurity
vulnerabilities.
What makes industrial control systems so insecure is when they were designed and for what purpose; the report notes that the age of the system usually means they run on software that manufacturers no longer update and support. In addition, they typically run on platforms with lower power consumption and memory restrictions which make it challenging to run complicated software, further exacerbating the problem of relying on outdated operating systems. This is especially true for most vital US infrastructures, which can cause plenty of havoc when seized.
